124 imagesJudo is a sport, an art, a discipline, a recreational or social activity, a fitness program, a means of self-defense or combat, and a way of life. It is all of these and more. Kodokan Judo comes to us from the fighting system of feudal Japan. Founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano, Judo is a refinement of the ancient martial art of Jujutsu. Dr. Kano, President of the University of Education, Tokyo, studied these ancient forms and integrated what he considered to be the best of their techniques into what is now the modern sport of Judo. Judo was introduced into the Olympic Games in 1964 and is practiced by millions of people throughout the world today. People practice Judo to excel in competition, to stay in shape, to develop self-confidence, and for many other reasons. But most of all, people do Judo just for the fun of it.

Through several years Afghanistan has been ravaged by war and disturbance. The young and the children of Afghanistan have never experienced anything but strife. The situations of the women and children have been marked by suppression, and as a consequence of this games and sports have not been a part of their adolescence. Judo for peace wants to give the sport and activity back to the children and the young of Afghanistan, specially focused on activities including girls. web page: www.judoforfred.org

32 imagesBurundi (pronounced [bu'?undi]), officially the Republic of Burundi, is a country in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. Its size is just under 28,000 km² with an estimated population of almost 8,700,000. Its capital is Bujumbura. Although the country is landlocked, much of the southwestern border is adjacent to Lake Tanganyika. The Twa, Tutsi, and Hutu peoples have occupied Burundi since the country's formation five centuries ago. Burundi was ruled as a kingdom by the Tutsi for over two hundred years. However, at the beginning of the twentieth century, Germany and Belgium occupied the region, and Burundi and Rwanda became a European colony known as Ruanda-Urundi. Political unrest occurred throughout the region because of social differences between the Tutsi and Hutu, provoking civil war in Burundi throughout the middle twentieth century. Presently, Burundi is governed as a presidential representative democratic republic. Sixty-two percent of Burundians are Roman Catholic, eight to ten percent are Muslims and the rest follow indigenous beliefs and other Christian denominations. Burundi is one of the ten poorest countries in the world. Burundi has a low gross domestic product, largely due to civil wars, corruption, poor access to education, and the effects of HIV/AIDS. Burundi is densely populated, with substantial emigration. Cobalt and copper are among Burundi's natural resources. Some of Burundi's main exports include coffee and sugar.

20 imagesBig and restless horses with serious looking and arrogant horsemen high in their saddles are riding like majesties into the old, dusty, but still impressive and admirable Buzkashi Stadium in Kabul, Afghanistan. The audience is already there and is almost as impatient as the horses. Buzkashi means "goat-fetching" or "goat-killing", and is the national sport of Afghanistan. Watching such a fight feels like travelling 1000 years back in time; it smells of war, manhood and testosterone. There are no rules, no soft men, and no women allowed. Her er ingen regler, her er ingen myke menn. Kvinner ingen adgang.
